Melbourne Art Network

About Melbourne Art Network

Melbourne Art Network is an independent guide to art in Melbourne. We publish guides to art history, including the Heidelberg School, Heide and modernism, First Peoples art and a timeline of key moments; to galleries, including visiting the NGV, contemporary art spaces, buying art and buying First Nations art ethically; and to public art, including laneway street art, the city's public art collection, self-guided walks and the rules around street art. Our art day planner helps visitors build a simple timetable for a day of galleries and street art.

Why we exist

Melbourne has an extraordinary amount of art, much of it free, but information is scattered across dozens of websites. We want locals and visitors to have one clear, independent place to start, with the history behind what they see and practical advice for visiting and buying.

How we work

We write every guide in our own words. For facts about institutions, history, public art and the art market, we rely on authoritative sources such as the NGV, Heide Museum of Modern Art, ACCA, Museums Victoria, the National Museum of Australia, the City of Melbourne, the Office for the Arts and the Indigenous Art Code. We list our sources on each page. We never invent statistics, prices, quotes or testimonials, and we don't rank galleries or value artworks.

Independence

Melbourne Art Network (melbourneartnetwork.com.au) is an independent information site. We are not a gallery, museum, dealer, council or arts organisation, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by any gallery, museum, artist, organisation or agency named on this site, any previous operator of this domain, or any business with a similar name.

General information only

Opening hours, exhibitions, entry arrangements and rules change. Always check with each venue before you visit. Our guides are general information, not legal, valuation or investment advice.
